Artist Statement
I work primarily in photography, mixed media, and printmaking, exploring the complex interplay of solitude, connection, and disconnection within urban environments. My work seeks to capture the tension between the overwhelming energy of a city and the quiet isolation that can exist within it, particularly in the context of human relationships and the spaces we inhabit.
Having immigrated to the United States at a young age, I have long grappled with feelings of displacement and the search for belonging. This experience deeply informs my artistic practice, shaping how I perceive and engage with the world around me. Photography became my sanctuary—a medium through which I could process these emotions, find solace, and observe the intricate, often unnoticed details of the urban landscape. It allowed me to embrace the paradox of solitude: the simultaneous sense of disconnection and connection it can bring.
Minimalism is central to my work. Through black-and-white photography, I strip away the distractions of color, honing in on the emotional resonance of light, shadow, texture, and form. These elements allow me to explore abstraction, creating compositions that evoke introspection and stillness. In my mixed media pieces, I incorporate black paint and textural elements to further distill the essence of my themes, emphasizing simplicity while leaving space for complexity to emerge.
Cities are at the heart of my practice—not just as physical spaces but as emotional landscapes. They are places of constant motion and energy, yet within them exist moments of profound stillness. My work often focuses on these quiet, liminal moments: the interplay of light filtering through a street corner, the quiet strength of a solitary figure, or the subtle beauty of a changing season. These vignettes serve as meditations on our collective search for meaning and connection amidst the chaos of modern life.
Ultimately, my art is an invitation: to slow down, to pause, to see. It is a call to reconnect with the stillness that often eludes us in the relentless rush of daily existence. In these quiet spaces, I believe we can find not only a deeper understanding of our own solitude but also a renewed sense of connection—to ourselves, to others, and to the environments we inhabit.
